In the bike shop: Ti is back

Jul 30, 2007  ·  12:07 PM  ·  permalink

While some would argue that Ti frames never left, they don’t get the respect they used to with all the industry focus on carbon these days. But in the latest issue of Road Bike Action they feature top Ti frames, including a new Litespeed that’s sub 800 grams. I’ve owned 3 ti frames and another, our Modal project, is being built now.

I race on carbon, just like any roadie, but when it’s time for a tour, all-day ride, endless hours in the rain, or just commuting, Ti is it for me.

What about Steel baby! (from the guy who can’t afford custom Ti).

Steel is also forever real, especially all the new tubesets coming. My thing with Ti is no paint and a brushed satin finish. Treat it badly, and who cares.

Steel may be real, but Ti is fly! I went to titanium last year (a Habanero), and love it. Everything I love about steel, but more-so. As DL points out, it is also a lot more hassle-free.

I used to be skeptical of unpainted frames, but the fact is, my bike still looks new. My painted frames start to show age.
