Sheldon is my co-pilot

Feb 22, 2008  ·  08:07 AM  ·  permalink

sheldon_copilot.jpg I’ve been seeing a lot of tributes to Sheldon Brown, lately, as one would expect on the passing of a figure of such magnitude. Most featuring his helmeted, hawked head (that eagle’s got a name, ‘Igor’ — who knew!). Sheldon has a posse shirts. Sheldon ‘Obey’ badges (some background on the OBEY campaign here). My favorite printed media to date: Sheldon is my co-pilot. It’s great that Sheldon has a posse, but I’d much rather think of him riding along side. Speaking of riding, some cities seem to be having Sheldon rides. What’s your favorite Sheldon tribute? Are you riding for Sheldon later this year (or have you already?).

I set up a small ride the day after his passing. Eight people showed up after work and we rode around the streets, BSing and enjoying the cycle life. It was nice.

I’d love a Sheldon shirt, show some love.

Another source for a Sheldon memorial thing is here: http://www.bikepunk.com/ The link brings up a JPEG of a durable vinyl sticker (about 2”x3”). It shows the now iconic image of Sheldon grinning in the helmet adorned with Igor the Eagle. Send Mike a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) and he’ll toss in a few for ya.

The sticker—or a shirt (!)—gives us an opportunity to keep Sheldon’s memory alive by telling about him & pointing inquirers to his pages (thanks, Harris Cyclery, for maintaining ‘em—and thanks, Mike & Sonja of bIKE pUNK for the stickers).

There is a portrait of Sheldon done by his brother. You can see it here: http://www.junila.com/portraits/pages/scb-by-rgb.html

From the page: “The family of the widely-respected and much-missed Sheldon Brown prefer not to have permission given for the use of this image (in bicycling blogs, etc). In response to requests from Sheldon’s admirers, information about the availability for purchase of high-resolution prints of “Bicycle Guru” will be posted in this spot when the prints are ready.”

When these are available, I’d really like to get one.
