You’ve got some guts. Auto and bus drivers in Shanghai are friggin’ maniacs, I’ve seen it first hand, almost got run over a few times as just a pedestrian. Wear a helmet, and full body armor if you got it. Be careful, man!

Good points. We’ll def stick to the paths and trails — not a critical manners-type ride. We rode all over Beijing, just about a year ago, and we’re good.

What were you in Shanghai for?

Just so you know, the convention center you mention for a meetup is in Pudong. Most of the interesting rides are in Puxi, across the river. The only way to get a bike across the river is on the ferry - unless you persuade a taxi driver to put your bike in the boot (sorry, trunk). What date and time did you have in mind for a meetup?

re: “We’ll def stick to the paths and trails” - there aren’t any. Beijing cycling is closer to Pudong cycling with wide bike lanes. Puxi is a whole ‘nother story. 21st century Chinese traffic crammed onto 1920s roads.

Thank you — that’s exactly what we needed to know. We’ll have folding bikes with us so taxis won’t be an issue. We normally arrive in a town and figure it out. I’ll map out the times we’ll ride in an update to the post. Looks like Labici bike shop will ride with us as well.

Tuesday and Friday are open — I understand Friday is a holiday — and Wed/Thurs either early morning or during lunch.

What times work for you? And thank you— we’re really looking forward to this. And note that Beijing, we were near the Olympic village was perfectly rideable in bike lanes (with situational awareness) and we want to ride safe.

Folding bikes are good. You might want to come over n the ferry anyway as its close to the convention center you are at and takes about 15 minutes. Former French Concession area is tree lined streets and art deco buildings. Pudong is big wide avenues and pretty boring to cycle. I think I can meet you in the French Concession (Xintiandi ok?) or possibly off the ferry on Puxi side on the friday. Just have to check what Madame Crash Test Dummy’s plans are. Call me when you arrive in Shanghai and we can work it out. I presume you got the e-mail with my mobile number on it.
