Congestion Charging

Apr 04, 2008  ·  02:37 PM  ·  permalink

All over the news here in Shanghai, on CNN International, is NYC’s congestion charging initiative. Following London and the UK, NYC is about to implement fees to drive into the city. Woohoo we say and Dahon has already got a page up supporting the measure and expect other manufactures to follow.

We’d hope most people would just realize, “hey you can ride in,” but if we’ve got to do some hand waving to help, then ok.

Your thoughts on city’s charging to drive?

Based on the history of downtown’s in the US, as property prices increased businesses moved out, except in NYC. I think congestion charges in any other American city will have the unintended consequence of contributing to sprawl. There doesn’t seem to be any inante need for Americans to stay in the central business district in comparison to how European or Asian cities operate. The book “Edge City” by garreau is an excellent observation and study on how businesses moved out and the reasons they moved out.

That said, I completely think NYC should do it so that it can become a beacon of urbanism for the US and the increased investment in transit will change peoples minds about how a subway can work.

Great site!

And the bill is dead, without even a vote.
