Heaviest Biker on Earth - 1898

Jul 03, 2008  ·  07:11 AM  ·  permalink

This German postcard from 1898, depicts Emil Nauke. The post card claims that Emil is “the heaviest biker on Earth.”

Despite his rotund size, little feet, and belly that nearly touches the bars, Emil is dressed in dapper attire, and is proudly seated atop his bicycle for this photo. This funny oddity of cycling history, makes me think of Chris Farley in Tommy Boy. On the other hand, Emil is clearly a bike hugger, and this photo makes me want to shout, “Get on with your bad self Emil!”

Mr. Emil obviously enjoys the finer things in life just a little to much. If he would ride this fahrrad more, he would be able to enjoy all the wurst und bier he can consume without the fear of loosing sight of this handle bars. He is a real testiment to the sturdiness of that bike.

Yeah, this guy definitely loves the wurst and bier. Ultimately this photo appealed to me because of the great outfit Emil’s wearing, and how proud he is to be on his bike. I’m left wondering how he got up there, but I love the proud look he’s wearing.

I sometimes feel like Emil, on a climb, when the skinny dudes are passing. Later though, on the flats, it’s diesel motor time.

I doubt our hero Emil can get in such a great aero tuck for motoring the flats!

I’d love to see someone bring back this look. That is one dapper lad!

No time like the present Jeff! All you need is a lot of beer, a little tweed, and a bike!

And dainty little feet; this look is predicated by tiny feet.
