Be careful on the supposed “calmest road”. I am a native Las Vegan and both lived and worked less than a half mile south of that road, and rode it almost daily for 2 years, witnessing that many drivers take this 25mph zone at 40mph regularly.

I have found that the Red Rock Scenic Loop to be much calmer. It was featured in Bicycling magazine a few months back, and I have met people from as far as Australia who put this route on their list of reasons to visit Vegas. You can learn more about this ride here: http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip.aspx?tripId=200546

It is a great challenge, and even fixed gear riders regularly do the route. I would recommend this to any and all bicyclists whoe come to Vegas.

Of Course the Scenic Loop is calmer than Alta Dr. The loop is in a National Recreation Area and is one-way with very little traffic for the entire 13 miles. Not to mention that there is a fee for cars that enter.

Alta is an exceptional route for urban commuters with a maintained striped bike lane, relatively low traffic volumes and takes you all the way downtown.

The loop is an epic ride but you wouldn’t ride it to work.

BTW, I’m a native as well.
