Carlos Sastre’s new ride may be equipped with dusty old DA7800, but he’s got his favourite Rotor elliptical chainrings mounted. But that’s not what grabs my attention. It’s the prototype Rotor cranks that has been drilled out for light weight.

I’m getting dizzy just looking at it, but just like Sastre, I’m thinking if it saves a few grams and someone else is paying for it, why the heck not? Neither one of us will ever crank out enough watts to complain about “noodly” cranks.
i’m more concerned about fatigue life. i don’t pretend to have created a computer model to analyze the fatigue behavior of this crank, but you don’t see a whole lot of structures that are aluminium, see significant torsional and bending forces, and are full of holes.
Err, no thank you. That doesn’t look safe for me at all.
