Recent news and updates about An Event Apart Seattle 2009

Designing with Web Standards 3rd Edition arrived while cooking dinner last night at Hugga HQ. Much of what we do at Bike Hugger and for our clients at Textura Design is done with web standards. It’s not something I talk about everyday anymore — used to when I was a member of the Web Standards Project and lecturing about blogging in the early days. Have you been to a website or blog lately that looked like crap in one browser and not in another? Unlikely and all that standardized code is being read just fine by iPhones, Google phones, and the next whatever mobile device.

The arrival of the book reminded me about the importance of web standards, how far we come, HTML5, fonts on the web, mobility, accessibly, and so on. Back in the day it was a fight for standards and a good one. I’m sure our readers wish the bike industry had better standards …

Cooking With Standards

I’ll start reading the book after dinner and post about it. My team has read, cited, and referred to the 1st and 2nd editions. More importanly, I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with the authors: Jeffrey Zeldman and Ethan Marcotte.

Earlier this year we had a Mobile Social while An Event Apart was in town.

Check the paint job on Lance's bike -- that's Shepard Fairey of Obey Giant and Obama posters fame. Damn. We posted earlier on Lance working with Fairy on a mural, but didn't know a bike was commissioned.

Another great example of how bikes are part of pop culture and crossing over into modern art. Now to see art merged with transportation and cargo bikes.

With An Event Apart (AEA) Seattle over and my temporary captivity on a flight back to Philadelphia, I thought it would be good to recap the Mobile Social (MoSo) ride and event that happened this past Sundayr. This was my third Mobile Social event and my first time to ride a bike in Seattle. Byron was kind enough to allow me to borrow the Brompton folding bike to use before, during, and after the MoSo.

Hello, Sunshine!

Philly has had it's usual mix of schizophrenic Spring weather to really make a trip out to Seattle appealing--with or without all the rain. I awoke on Sunday morning early--body still operating on Eastern Time--and put in a solid, 9-10 mile run. This happened while the rest of Seattle attended early morning religious services to thank their respective higher powers for the AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL SUNNY MORNING. I say this only because it seemed like there was a distinct lack of people outside enjoying the day.

hoy_brompton.jpgAfter burning up my legs on the hills around the Queen Ann neighborhood, I hooked up with the Huggas at Hugga HQ to pick up the Brompton. I got a quick demo of how to fold and unfold the bike before taking it out for a spin.

Next Mobile Social is at WebVisions 2009, after that Interbike.

Thanks Seattle for a good Sunday afternoon ride during the Mobile Social. We rode along the waterfront to South Park and Schooner Exact for some fresh keg beer. Gave away the Yuba Mundo shown in this photo, Princeton Tec lights, and schwag from our friends at Internet Explorer 8.

The next MoSo is in Portland during WebVisions and we hope to see you there.

As schwag goes, that's damn good -- from Princeton Tec, Internet Explorer 8, and more. Giving all that away today at the Mobile Social Seattle. Also a Yuba Mundo cargo bike.

For the Mobile Socials at An Event Apart and WebVisions next month, Princeton Tec sent us a box of light love. We're giving all those lights away . . . also giving away a Yuba Mundo and a Breezer city bike.

The Mobile Social is in our home town of Seattle next month during An Event Apart -- a web conference. On Sunday May 3rd, we'll urban ride with some cargonistas from the Bell Harbor Convention Center to Southpark for a keg tapping at Schooner Exact.

AEA blogged about the MoSo last week quoting me

"During AEA's last visit to Seattle in 2007, I noticed a bike rack with other cyclists and talked to a designer about his ride in," says DL Byron, founder of the Mobile Social effort. "As a result, I started thinking about all the times I've seen designers, developers, creatives ride to events like this -- and that sounded like a group ride to me!"

That's right and then we brought the MoSo concept to Austin during SXSW and Portland for Webvisions.
