Taxi Trailer in Austin

user-pic

Saw these in Austin as well. That’s a taxi trailer for an ad-hoc pedicab and we could use these for our fans and party attendees that don’t ride so much. Could parade Zeldman et al around on one as maybe a ride MC.

Then we’d probably go to fast around a corner and bounce one of them out, but the fun we’d have!

Mobile Social SXSW 2010 Tomorrow

user-pic

The Mobile Social SXSW is tomorrow and of all the MoSos we do, this one is El Guapo, the Mucho Moso, where we do bike culture Texas style. The crew at Social Cycling ATX is leading the ride with ride guides. They’ll make sure you all get to Mellow Johnnys for the party and have a fun, safe time.

Quick access to the details

MoSo QR Code for SXSW Scan this code for quick access to the MoSo details. You need a wristband or SXSW badge to get into the party. Get a wristband from one of us at the start of the ride.

The Route

There are turnoff points for those that want to ride shorter. The route is 14 miles and it’s a relaxed, cruiser, fun ride, no-dropping-anyone pace. We stop at red lights and don’t block traffic.

Meet the Bike Map Makers

Googlers Bike Map Shirt Google is riding with us and at Mellow Johnnys to show you their Bike Maps. You’ll know who they are because they’re wearing these shirts.

Google Adds Biking To Google Maps

user-pic

burke_gilman_screenshot.jpeg

Before heading to Florida on a work trip several years ago I lay sprawled across my den with a giant road map of the area, a set of highlighters, a guide book and my laptop. A frequent traveler, I like to bring my folding bike with me, and I like to head out on bike rides between meetings or trade show stops.

As I looked up cycling routes in my guide book I’d compare them to a Google Map search of the area and then stencil in the most suitable rides with my various highlighters. Guidebook, Google, map, guidebook, Google map. It took me about two hours to sketch out the various trips from my hotel room to the surrounding environs, none of which would be necessary if Google Maps included the feature the company is rolling out today, a new bike layer with directions in major metropolitan areas.

Google, who is joining Bike Hugger at the Mobile Social in Austin at SXSW to talk about this exciting new feature (more on that in other posts) has taken a lot of time to develop the much-requested cycling layer for their popular Google Maps tool. No mere add-on, the new functionality provides cyclists with some impressive features thanks to an overhaul in how Google Maps works.

In many ways, Google’s technology will be more accurate and more detailed than anything that regional planning groups or municipal governments tend to provide as it will indicate not only state-designated or city-designated bike lanes and routes, but trails and other bike paths as well.

In Austin for Mellow Johnny's Classic

user-pic

Courier.jpg

The folks at Mellow Johnny’s are holding a big race up at Juan Pelota’s ranch this weekend, and Hugga is in town to cover it. We’ll have images and thoughts from the race on the site on Sunday, so if you’ve got a hankering for some racing or a prurient interest in a ranch owned by Lance, tune in.

We shook off some weather-delayed-flight-jet-lag by walking around Austin, which is easily one of my favorite cities in America. Hunkered down inside a coffee shop called the Hideaway (apropos) for some delicious brew and met Daniel, a local courier with Corporate Couriers who was fueling up on caffeine while rocking the tunes. Daniel had a big smile on his face and told me that he’s fine with riding in the rain (which is good because it was pouring for a while).

After chatting up the locals (and dodging them riding on the sidewalks) we meandered over to Mellow Johnny’s by way of the super-mega-large Whole Foods. MJ’s was flooded with tourists and branded clothing was flying off the shelves.

My wife fell in love with a polished-lugged Bianchi frame there and while she gawked at Lance’s bikes on the walls I grabbed another coffee and looked at the Seattle-like weather.

The bats of Austin were almost more enjoyable to me than a meal at Frank (where else can you get a rosemary sausage, poutine and a beer on a rainy day?) because they’re just so damned impressive.

More shots from the trip coming up soon, coverage from the race on Sunday.

Steal this SXSW Panel

user-pic

We’re already planning our return to SXSW with the Mobile Social 2010 and this year we’ve pitched Steal this Panel

“Pick this SXSW panel and we’ll get up there and talk about whatever the Twitter tells us to do via @replies and hash tags.”

If that gets picked, we’ll have lots of fun with it and observe how much game Twitter has changed socially, in cycling, and for business.

SXSWPanelPicker-lg(2).png We can’t think of a better way to talk at SXSW than with audience participation. Of course, I’ll talk about what we do here at Bike Hugger and more.

Please give the panel a thumbs up. Voting closes this week on September 4th.

Lance's Dublin Ride

user-pic

Lance Armstrong’s ride in Dublin continues to make news

I think the essence is very simple. You have a man, a bicycle, a public park and an open road. I would go and do that anyway. Cycling is a sport of the people, and as you’ve probably watched the tour, sometimes a little too close to the people.

he told the Irish Independent. 1200 people showed up to ride with him after he posted an invitation on Twitter.

Dispatches from Austin

user-pic

Our Austin peeps tipped us to Breaking Away with Mellow Johnnys

The event came about as a brainstorm between Rapha and Mellow Johnny's GM's Slate Olson and Craig Staley as their effort to pay tribute to the 1979 Academy Award winning film Breaking Away.

And The trials and tribulations of being a bike thief...

I'm retired and I don't have nothing else to do so I am going to find you, if you bought this bike, you best burn it, there are over 30 uncles, dads, cousins looking for your sick ass and her bike

After the Urban Ride, BBQ, and scwhag-a-thon, we partied at Mellow Johnnys to conclude the Mobile Social SXSW. As the dance floor heated up, the shirts came off.

Note the video is borderline NSFW with grinding, shirtless fixie kids.

Freakingest Freak Bike

This bike appeared during the Mellow Johnnys After Party fashion show. I got this iPhone crap photo. Anyone from Austin know who made this? Does it have a name? Why is it so cool.

freaking_freak_bike.jpg

After arriving in Austin, we went out for Tacos with the Mellow Johnnys crew and talked with Erin O'Neill. She doesn't spend much time in front of a camera, and was shy, but we thought she did great and told us who this Lance guy is we've been hearing about.
