Bahamas: Folding Cousins

user-pic

Traveling with the Brompton and Dahon Mµ SL on this trip to the Bahamas, using Dahon’s Airporter cases.

IMG_6890.jpg

Kept the weight under 50 pounds for each bike and didn’t get charged extra by the airlines. Before the trip, Dahon sent us the iPhone Mount and we’ll post on that soon.

London Underground Conmuter

She commuted with a Brompton. Noted that is wasn’t easy, but still good, and better than driving.

Those of us that travel with bikes know it’s an arms race with the airlines — how much they charge came up earlier this year when Pam and I got popped $175.00 per-bike-one-way by Northwest Airlines. As Mark wrote in response to our trip

Ask about and everyone has a tale of how a friend of theirs flew a bike for $5 blah, blah, blah…. Let me tell you, there was a period of time where I logged 100,000 frequent flier miles over two years. I know about flying with a bike … nothing beats the S&S system for flying a 700C wheeled bike,

Brompton Traveling: on the way home We know how to fly with bikes too and got charged on that trip because we flew with Scicon cases that say, “bicycle” and are in the shape of a bicycle. Normally we fly with S&S and also with Bromptons and Dahons. The advantage of all of those folders is that they either go into a case that squeaks under the airline surcharge for oversize baggage — pack it light to keep it under weight — or go right into the overhead.

Until recently that is.

Folding Bike Race

user-pic

Some of you may have seen me take a few laps on the Dahon Mu EX between races at the Ballard crit this weekend. While I was doing that, a real folding bike race was going on in London -- the annual Smithfield Nocturne.

With An Event Apart (AEA) Seattle over and my temporary captivity on a flight back to Philadelphia, I thought it would be good to recap the Mobile Social (MoSo) ride and event that happened this past Sundayr. This was my third Mobile Social event and my first time to ride a bike in Seattle. Byron was kind enough to allow me to borrow the Brompton folding bike to use before, during, and after the MoSo.

Hello, Sunshine!

Philly has had it's usual mix of schizophrenic Spring weather to really make a trip out to Seattle appealing--with or without all the rain. I awoke on Sunday morning early--body still operating on Eastern Time--and put in a solid, 9-10 mile run. This happened while the rest of Seattle attended early morning religious services to thank their respective higher powers for the AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL SUNNY MORNING. I say this only because it seemed like there was a distinct lack of people outside enjoying the day.

hoy_brompton.jpgAfter burning up my legs on the hills around the Queen Ann neighborhood, I hooked up with the Huggas at Hugga HQ to pick up the Brompton. I got a quick demo of how to fold and unfold the bike before taking it out for a spin.

Pretty in Pink and folding

user-pic

Continuing our Pink theme, just spotted this pink and turquoise Brompton.

See how I’d do this is show up in a full-on Hincapie-designed, Hugga Skinsuit, aero helmet, and lay out across the bars like Lance on his black dragon. I’d also totally cheat in the Le Mans start by having hugga sandbaggers slow everyone else down …

Brompton @ Elliott Bay

user-pic

Commuted to Web Design World Seattle at the Westin with the Brompton and via the Water Taxi. Paused here at the World Trade Center elevator platform for a photo looking out across Elliott Bay.

brompton_bay.jpg

Route:

  1. Beach Drive to Water Taxi
  2. Water Taxi to Downtown, rode along waterfront
  3. World Trade Center elevator up to Western
  4. Western to Blanchard
  5. Blanchard to 5th and the Westin.

Arrived, refreshed, relaxed, and no traffic. Duration about an hour. Ate lunch and talked to the attendees all about blogging and social media. Was reminded how fun the Brompton is.

Midday Ride

user-pic

I rode the Brompton to a meeting downtown. Rode up to a cyclist on a Bike Friday who was riding to Magnolia for a meeting. We then met a cyclist on a Redline who was out for his lunch ride.

Riding the Brompton at CES

user-pic

So I rode the Brompton folding bike in Las Vegas during CES. I rode from the hotel right into the Intel booth in the same time that it would have taking me to get to the line waiting to buy monorail tickets (to wait in line for the very slow monorail to the waiting point at the station across the street from the convention hall..blah, blah waiting for traffic to cross blah, blah etc…etc).

Setting aside how much I hate the streets of Vegas, here are my impressions:

Brompton Factory Tour

user-pic

Our 22nd Huggacast, and last one for 07, features a tour of Brompton’s Factory with Will Butler-Adams, Engineering Director. Brompton is the London-based designer and manufacturer of the Brompton folding bicycle and related accessories.

I posted earlier this month on riding a Brompton with their tech specialist, Rory Ferguson. The video features a discussion of all the parts that go into a Brompton, welding, wheel building, and assembly. The bike shown at the end, folded by my desk, is the one I brought home. It’s a new model with a rear frame clip and a snappy 2 speed drivetrain.

Brompton: High-performance folding

user-pic

“High-performance folding” isn’t a combination of words that most cyclists would use; unless, they’ve ridden a Brompton. I was surprised by the positive feel, speed, and climbing ability of a bike that fits in an airplane overhead comparment. To see how Brompton builds their bikes, I toured the factory outside of London and learned much about a bike that’s in a constant state of engineering — for over 20 years.
