Tokyo Fixed Gear has opened a shop in Soho, on Peter St behind Madame JoJo’s.

You’ve got Velocity rims in an obnoxiously (but wonderfully) bright color, and you’ve got a frame painted shades of awesome. What’s next? Some tires to match. Check out these great looking clinchers from Fyxation. At $50 a tire you’re not going to want to do a lot of skid-stops, but you are going to look good while you’re trackstanding on your way to Stumptown or Philz.

The tires come in a choice of colors (I’m grabbing these in green though) including pink and orange (and black, if you’re oh-so-boring) and run 700x28 with “pinch flat protection.” (Whatevs.)

National Geographic Loves Fixies

user-pic

skitched-11.jpg

National Geographic just released their list of "The Next Big Things," items that are "game changing redesigns" of classic icons of outdoor fun. Instead of picking a multi-thousand-dollar road bike (as is so often the case with glossy travel mags) Geo has gone with a Swobo fixed gear. It's a pretty bike and an even prettier photo shoot of outdoor goodies.

Huggacast 108: Cargo Bike Action

user-pic

After hearing the full pitch on Globe Bikes, we rode around the Mill Museum doing tricks, and power slides, and stuff. Some Cargo Bike Action.

Globe Bike Brand: first impression

user-pic

Bottle cap, billboard, big fonts, and red -- Globe is making a statement with the brand: "inspire everyone to a cycling lifestyle." Also, a particular attention to detail, serious about the product, and bringing something to market they believe in. This isn't some diluted idea and they did it in less than a year.

Mission Bicycles Opens New Store

user-pic

We noticed Mission Bicycles last year for making fixies with no visible branding. They sell, "a blank canvas for design." Mission is opening a new store this weekend in San Francisco.

As I said then, we'd want ours in Hugga green with our badge on the headtube.

Nabiis goods. Bike parts, DVDs, from the fixie scene in Taiwan. We missed this crew during our trips to Taipei -- won't do so again.

After the Urban Ride, BBQ, and scwhag-a-thon, we partied at Mellow Johnnys to conclude the Mobile Social SXSW. As the dance floor heated up, the shirts came off.

Note the video is borderline NSFW with grinding, shirtless fixie kids.

Aerospoke FAIL

Click through, view the largest size, and see that the hub is still connected to the fork. I switched carbon bars after one got doored and I saw how thin the material was and how it catastrophically failed. It was just a few mils thick.

Mashing the Tour of California

user-pic

Keeping their word, MASH is riding the TOC fixed. Oh and in the rain, without fenders, and Garrett with an aerobar.

Walton has no front brake. How that works on a mountainous descent in monsoon rains? Well, lets find out!

Fixed & more at the Tour of California

The Tour of California is starting and we’re watching it online here

kit_mashsf.jpg and wherever else it pops up.

Adding to the fun, the badasses at MASHSF have promised to ride the entire 750 miles of the TOC on fixed gear bikes.

Livestrong has meetups planned after every stage and I’m sure each host city is teeming with bike culture.

Our brohams at Road BIke Action are there with a Solvang Ride on 2/20.

Please add your where your watching the TOC in the comments below.

The other day I got an email from Byron asking about why “hipsters ride fixies with stub straight bars”, so I’ve been thinking about trends in fixed gear handlebars. Setting aside cultural relevance of the term “hipster” as either praise or pejorative, let me share a few perspectives.

Chub Hub

user-pic

I built this wheel for Jake, one of the Seattle fixie stars. It’s a Chub Hub, a double-sided fixed gear hub of massive proportions. The immense hub is constructed of carbon and aluminium with provision for cogs and track lockrings on both sides. The rim is a H+ Son, custom powdercoated black. Finished off with black DT Swiss Champion spokes and black brass nipples, the whole wheel is stealth. I thought I’d just cut the spokes and lace ‘em, but I hate to leave things unfinished.chub 1.jpg

Fixed gear, sure yeah whatever … look at that fender! On the rainiest of days, I’ve fantasized about a fender like this, one with the square footage of a catamaran sail.

A fender that dares the storm clouds: “rain on me, g’head.”

Whoever owns that bike, I’ll give you a Bike Hugger Buddy Flap to fly at full mast behind you.
