The Globe team spent a day in Copenhagen riding around with the camera rolling.

Reader Julian asks us if Globe Bikes are really for cargo.
Hey! As some of the few guys to ride Globe bikes more than once, I’m curious to know what you think of the Live and Haul, and your gut check favorite. Wondering how the Live porteur rack handles a front load (like your roll-on suitcase!) in motion and when parked & loading. And curious about the utility of the slightly stretched Haul rack. It’s a gorgeous rack, but without custom larger panniers (how much larger could they be?), it seems that a Live with aftermarket rear rack and panniers might be its cargo equal. I understand the Haul’s welded-on rack can handle much more weight, but realistically how would you carry that weight without freeloaders or other cargo solution? And isn’t the Haul begging for a centerstand (Hebie or other) rather than the chainstay-mounted kickstand? Love to know your thoughts! — Julian
The answer is light cargo yes, but not a big industrial load no. The bikes are errand-running, grocery-getters and work well for that purpose and a bit heavier loads, but I wouldn’t use them for delivering goods.
As you can see in the photos, I carried my suitcase from the Airport and rode the Live about 30 miles to Morgan Hill. Once the suitcase was strapped down, the ride was good. The bike was predictably tippy when parked and will fall over unless secured, even with a centerstand. I leaned it against a tree (known as a Treestand) when we stopped at Bicycle Express.
... Read more »We rode from SJC to Morgan Hill via the Coyote Creek Trail yesterday. The downtown part of the ride was a bit confusing with a trail terminating at a railroad crossing.
We thought if any locals saw they’d wonder WTF we were doing on that trail and Reeve who works for the RR had to tell me
Stay off the tracks. Railroads are private property and you are likely trespassing. Always expect a train, any time, any direction. Yeah, you’re smart and prolly won’t get hurt. Its kind of like wearing a helmet while motorcycling. Operation Lifesaver. I work for the rr so I have to say that.
Word.
Stopping for Turkish coffee we all marveled at the Starfuckers trick fixie bike. It was outside of Japanese store that sells clothes and fixie gear.
Ride Mojo
I found this toy that became the ride mojo and the mojo was working when a California Condo buzzed us and a turkey made sure we knew who was boss of the trail. We also saw deer and turtles, but not many other cyclists on the trail. They must come out on the weekends with their families.
Mexican Mini Golf
A few hours later, we arrived and ate lunch at Morgan Hill’s premiere mexican restaurant/minature golf course where I shot a hole-in-one!
Sushi and True Morgan Hillers
For dinner, it was sushi and then a bike pile at M&H for drinks where we met true Morgan Hillers.
Today we’re riding to Specialized HQ for a tour and more time with @globebikes.
@globebikes is meeting us at SJC and we’ll ride the Coyote Creek Trail to Morgan Hill for lunch tacos.
Later we’re talking bikes with the people from Specialized.
Just back from Greenville for Style in Motion and USPro, then we’re off to
- 9/9 — Carnivelo @REI_COOP HQ
- 9/14 — Riding with Globe Bikes around Morgan Hill CA
- 9/24 — Mobile Social Interbike
Then in October, we’re bike touring Prague. We may return to Taipei as well. That’s being discussed.
Last week Specialized rolled out a program to give away a (unspecified) number of their 2010 Stumpjumper FSRs to people willing to blog about their experiences. I'm looking forward to riding with my fellow Trail Crew folks after my entry wins.
Now I think it would be almost unfair for me to enter Specialized's newest contest, a chance to win a Globe bike in exchange for blogging about your experiences with one of their bikes. We loved the Globe bikes when we covered the launch of the product lines, and now is your chance to ride them, and become a "Glober." (I'd have gone with GlobeTrotter myself.)
For this contest Specialized has a page detailing the terms, but basically you have to tell them why you'd be a great blogger, why you'd have fun with the bike, the add your entry to their Facebook fan page. Easy as pie, right?
It would be hard to not have fun with a free Globe bike, so this should be a pretty spirited contest.
Sometimes as a photographer and a writer, I get to watch something I've done grow into some sort of monster. Take this seemingly innocuous photo from the Globe bike launch we covered. This particular bike was set up with the brake on the top tube not in seriousness, but just to express the different things you can do with a fixie.
Since the shot ran, the image has been a big topic of conversation on Flickr, and BikeSnobNYC even picked it up as a post. That's a lot of chatter for a picture of a bike with a brake in a funny place.
Show a pic of a bike with no brake though and people will completely ignore it.

Specialized's day-and-a-half press junket last week gave assembled urban-riding journalists a chance to get some hands on time with the new Globe lineup, a family of bikes with a ground-up overhaul designed to bring Specialized firmly into the urban riding scene.
It's not a big shock to anyone watch the usually-trendsetting company to hear that they missed a beat or two in the new urban riding song that's sweeping the nation--even their product managers admit as much when discussing the impetus behind the new Globe launch.
Many companies in Specialized's shoes would quickly bring to market a series of bikes without much thought to design or functionality. But that's not what happened with the Globe line (at least most of the line) and that's a pleasant surprise.

David assured me I wasn't signing something that'd get my ass kicked later.

Check Your Head
We snuck away from the all-day Globe event to just ride MPLS. With the camera in front of us, we thought it was fish-eye. So What'cha Want seemed right at the time:
"See I'm The Long Leaner Vincent The Cleaner I'm The Illest Motherfucker From Here To Gardena"

Another set of shots up from day 2 of the Specialized Globe product line intro. Meet the sexy new Roll, Haul, Live and the rest of the versatile new line as we trundle around MSP. Stops included One on One bike shop, the Mill Museum, and one of the big open parks along the water. (Sorry, I have utterly no clue which.)
Bottle cap, billboard, big fonts, and red -- Globe is making a statement with the brand: "inspire everyone to a cycling lifestyle." Also, a particular attention to detail, serious about the product, and bringing something to market they believe in. This isn't some diluted idea and they did it in less than a year.

This is Amber, she's the project engineer for the Globe line of bikes, which we're evaluating this week at a Specialized-sponsored press event. What I love about this shot is how much she's clearly glowing while she sits on a bike she designed from the bottom up.
There are a ton of great details on this bike (and you can check them out on my flickr site until we move them over to the Hugger page). Check out the hubs, grips, saddles and other standout details.
We're here in Minneapolis at a Specialized-sponsored media event for the unveiling of the new Globe Brand Bikes.
Globe is a new urban line from Specialized.
The Haul greeted us at the train stop and took our bags. More details as we ride and review the bikes. That's an Alfine class commuter with a bent-wood rack.
