Dew Deluxe and 925

These bikes locked together looked like a couple of bike bros. Aside from the owners themselves, as if they enjoyed riding together. They’re quite similar actually. Different heritage, designers and companies, but serve the same purpose. Ridden on the same daily routes.

Kona’s philanthropic Africa Bike program is taking another big step as Kona announces that they’re expanding to provide bikes for ethnic minority students in Vietnam by partnering with Roadmonkey, an organization started by former New York Times reporter Paul von Zielbauer. Roadmonkey leads “adventure philanthropic” trips.

The ten-person Roadmonkey group will ride along what used to be the Ho Chi Mihn Trail more than 300 miles en route to the Kon Ray school, where they’ll build bikes for the students and, get this, build an organic farm complete with 250 trees that will help the school raise money to bring on more students.

Kona’s Africa Bike program was started with Bicycling Magazine but is clearly growing into other regions of the world.

2010 Kona Jake the Snake

Jake the Snake

My first Cross bike was a Kona Jake the Snake. I loved it - it was Orange and awesome. The Jake has been in Kona’s lineup for years and is established as a mainstay in the cross scene. Byron sent me home with the 2010 Jake the Snake to put it to the test.

First impressions were pretty good. The blue paint jumps out at you which I like much better than the more “earthy” colors they’ve been pushing of late. I love the looks of the straight-blade carbon fork too. The Mavic Aksium wheelset are proven to be pretty sturdy, so a good choice for a bike you want to push into some tough terrain. The Continental tires looked alright, but I’d heard mixed reviews on them. Shimano 105, KORE Cross brakes, FSA Gossamer cranks. All good to go. I did swap out pedals and saddle because I just couldn’t run SPDs and a WTB saddle. Other than that - the bike was ready to ride.

Northwest Cyclocross Expo

user-pic

Bikes from Redline, Raleigh, Kona, Giant, Ridley are all available at the Northwest Cyclocross Expo tomorrow at South SeaTac Park.

This is not only a celebration of everything cyclocross, it's an opportunity for riders to look at equipment, talk to manufacturers, and meet racers.

Our Cyclocross coverage will start in September with the first races and full coverage on the Hub. See our Cyclocross Tips page and tags for more. We're back racing Single Speed in 10 and staying the course!

Kona Ute with Bags

user-pic

We've always dug the Kona Ute and like it even more with those orange bags. I could see a Plain Clothes Cyclist plan a whole outfit around the bike. Pair it with some bike to work pants, these shoes maybe, and a comfortable shirt.

ute_bags.jpg

Matching functionality with style doesn't just happen. Considerable thought went into this bike. You can tell from the color palette that's matching bags, wood plank, and seat.

The Kona Ute with bags pops on the sale floor.

Sure, the Cargonistas would complain, "but it's not an X or have 26 inch wheels -- boohoo." Who cares, really? Straight up it's a great, simple, stylish cargo bike. Not unlike another fav of ours the Cargo T.

Aloha Lance

user-pic

It’s a Big Island — we were riding South and Lance was riding North. We never saw him, but did see the same lava letters shown in this photo. While riding into Kona Town, a local stopped us to say, “did you know Lance was here?” “Yes!” we replied.

Every cyclist we passed, we’d check if it was Lance. I bet they were doing the same thing.

The Lightness of Computing

Just back from Kona and getting caught up, with more observations about traveling with a Macbook Air. As I’ve written, the computer does what it should, it’s not limited by the processor or graphics card. I ran a full compliment of software including iPhoto, Final Cut Express, and VMware fusion.

iBike Pro III: Simpler Power

user-pic

I’ve never been a training ride with my bros, when we’ve not stopped for a teammate to mess with their Powertap; to make sure they get the last possible watt measured, set their intervals up, they forgot to set it right, or something. While Powertaps have certainly improved from the days of failing on the bike, they’re still a complicated on-board, super-power-measuring computer. I’m not a Powertap user and have nothing bad to say about their devices — dudes swear by them, I know.

Kona Roads: Riding the Big Island

Riding hard on the roads of Kona, I thought that much suffering had come before us. That the training we were doing was nothing compared to the champions who had left it all on the road in the cycling leg of the Ironman.

Travel Mac: More Macbook Air

I recently posted about the Macbook Air as a travel computer for cyclists. I also covered my effort to

… become more mobile, simplified, and lightweight. Traveling with an folding bike, S&S case brings out the perfect packer in me and a desire to get even more efficient on the road.

In this post, I’ll continue the discussion on being more mobile and the “Great Mac Sync.”

From Japan: Ute in Shibuya

user-pic

Kona%20Ute.jpg My first day in Tokyo, we went to Shibuya and walked to Harajuku. After the UT t-shirt shop I saw this Kona Ute next to this one shop/boutique. This is the only longtail I’ve seen in Japan, but though Japan may score low on the cargo bike parameter, this country is near tops for commuters. I’ve never been to Amsterdam, but in Copenhagen I saw a crapload of commuters. I think that if the subway/rail system wasn’t the best in the world then there would be even more cyclists commuting. There are definitely less motorscooters here than Taipei too.

Economic Indicators

user-pic

The checks we’ve done with our local bike shops show strong sales, lots of customers, and really frazzled mechanics. I also heard that CleverCycles ran out of stock, and closed for two weeks to take a break from their phenomenal success.

xTracycles, Big Dummys, Kona Utes are all beating expectations in sales. And we’ve also heard a retro-attack is planned from manufacturers. Note that I don’t know if a shop has ever closed midsummer, because sales were so good.

Hugga Freerides

user-pic

Our friends at Kona invited us to Whistler BC’s Kokanee Crankworx

The most ground-breaking gravity fueled mountain bike festival in the history of all things badass.

That means the Huggas are gonna put on some baggy shorts, full-face helmets, some crusty ‘tude, and blast down a hill on a freakin’ Freeride bike — hooah!

Ya know, slopestyle is new for us, but when in Rome. Shit I may even do some huckin’.

Kona will also have their asphalt and utility bikes onsite. I’m hoping to ride one of these to a store and back …

Kona Ute -- Rock solid cargo bike

user-pic

UPDATE by Andrew: Wired linked to Dave’s review. Nice!

I got a chance to try out Kona’s upcoming integrated cargo bike, the Ute. I gotta say, this is one solid ride. The ute’s a longbike: a 29er (update: 700c x 47) with a giant rack built in capable of carrying 4 panniers, a couple of passengers, or just about anything else you can strap to it. Several longbike designs have been around for a while now, the Ute’s take is an integrated design — the extended cargo area’s built right into the frame. This makes the bike super solid. Add in smart design, great components and you’ve got yourself a one-stop cargo hauling go-anywhere machine.
