Come hang with the Bike Hugger team this weekend at the great Seattle Bicycle Expo. We’re hosting the Bicycle Bloggers Lounge upstairs where we’ll be talking to fellow cyclists, hunting down the coolest exhibits & new bike tech, and reviewing all those experimental new energy bars/drinks (hey, somebody has to be the guinnea pig).
Track the excitement as we live blog here here at on the community board and be sure to follow us on twitter at @BikeHugger The hashtag for this weekend is #bikexpo
This year’s Expo is on the northern edge of the waterfront up in Magnolia:
Smith Cove Cruise Terminal 91 2001 W Garfield St Seattle, WA 98119
Door is cash only ($10 for one day,$12 for two days) The ATM is bound to have long lines so plan ahead. Saturday the Expo is open 9am-6pm, Sunday 10am-4pm.
See you there!
Back from the Twitter Conference and next up it’s SXSW, Bike Expo, and then onto Mix 10 in Vegas. We ride wherever we go and you’re welcome to join us.
Our ride in Austin is part of the Mobile Social and we’re expecting 500+ cyclists. Look for this badge that identifies the Social Cycling ATX ride leaders, all 50 of them, and they’ll take you around Austin arriving at Mellow Johnnys for a party.

I arrive on Monday to speak Tuesday with @livestrongceo. We’re riding Tuesday morning. Not 500 of us, just a few and will announce more on Twitter.

This Southpark neighborhood kid noticed us roadies showing up on his turf. Within seconds of our stop to wait for another cyclist that was joining us, he arrived.
We respectfully denied his repeated requests to race. We also humored his various Q/As, including:
The scene was like a bike version of a Fat Albert cartoon. He even did some wheelies for us.

The battles to build it were before my time in Seattle and today the controversy is at the Ballard extension. While lawsuits and counter lawsuits make the news, this video from Streetfilms indirectly shows why. Industrial areas, big box stores, cars, and railroad tracks do not mix.
From a West Seattle perspective, Ballard and Stone Way (another law-suited bike lane) controversies don’t address Marginal Way where cyclists are riding through a heavy construction zone. In the history of livable cities, that’s where Seattle’s battle lines are drawn.
I’m talking about bikes, blogs, and Seattle on KMTT the Mountain this morning. Mountain listeners, we’re a blog about bike culture and curate all things bike here. Like this

Into bikes as well? We’re at the Bike Expo next month with Cascade and ride around the world in events we call Mobile Socials.

That’s a first — the New Years Day is a winter storm with 25-mph winds and a bonus salt-water splash coming around Alki Beach.

Spotted this commuter in the lobby of the Pacific Building downtown. She works for the Wilderness Society and rides everyday. They don’t mind her taking the bike through the lobby or parking it at her cube. She’s had that pickle bucket for about 5 years.

Don’t know if anyone has ever studied what old bikes people still ride, but Raleigh has to top the list. See them everywhere.

While Byron globetrots, the rest of us are here in Seattle are in what we call the “rainy season(s)”. Late September through more or less May is WET. It’s worth bringing back Byron’s post on
Riding in the Rain.
Cycle U is opening a new location in West Seattle. Cycle U offers indoor training and coaching. In this location, the services include bikes and a shop with clinics and more.

Great news to see another bike shop opening in the Seattle area and also that it’s in a former car dealership. I posted on re-cycling GM dealerships earlier this year and, well, there ya go.

Lemond Zurich and I kept a brisk commuter pace while discussing frame materials.
Wondered what all the construction was between the Stadia with Bianchi Flatbar and hoped the City would at least add a bike lane.
Raleigh Cross bike appreciated the “nice bike” comment as I passed and Kona Dew just nodded as I rode by.
She lives at the bottom of Queen Anne, works in downtown Seattle, and loves riding her bike around.

This Fall, we’re back in the Cross scene. We’ll cover it more with racing and new gear. Also working on our Baryshnikov over the Barriers technique, knowing where the saddle is, and more style.
Last year with produced a series of videos, like this one. See more of them on our Cross collection page and Cross tag.
The BFF is coming to Seattle on September 11 and 12th.
While we were in Greenville SC, Critical Mass rode across the West Seattle Bridge. Imagine the busiest, elevated highway in your local area, and Critical Mass rode across that.
They had a police escort. The action starts at 1:44 in. At the beginning, there’s a bonus roller blader.
Lots of comments on the West Seattle Blog did not appreciate the mass on a freeway.
JJTweets was on the scene and snapped this photo. Check the Critical Mass tag for our previous coverage.
