Best Day Evar: with bikes!

user-pic

In what maybe considered the best day ever for a cyclist like Eric Steele, he rode with us down the Vegas strip in the Mobile Social Interbike

and then won a Novara Fusion

Eric provides a variety of marketing services for the outdoor and hospitality industries at Steele Media and is based in Idaho Springs, CO.

He gets his Fusion next week and will upload the photos. REI is giving away more Fusions online via Facebook.

Mobile Social Interbike Tonight

user-pic

The Mobile Social Interbike presented by REI with Globe Bikes and Dahon is on tonight. We’re riding from the Sands, on the Strip, to a USA Crits VIP Tent at Mandalay Bay.

MASH SF Alleycat race at Interbike 2009

Where to Meet

Outside of the Sands Main Entrance at 6:00 PM - we’ll start to congregate at 5:45. You’ll find us. Were the ones with the bikes. Get a wristband from Mark V.

The Route

The route has changed due to construction and we’re going to turn left out of the Sands, left on the Strip, and onto Mandalay Bay where our VIP tent awaits us with cold beer.

The Rules

To keep peace with the PoPo, all we ask is that you ride with us in one lane and obey the traffic laws. The City of Las Vegas requires lights and Princeton Tec has that covered. They’re giving away lights at the VIP Tent.

Bikes

Globe Bikes has bikes to lend, first come first serve.

Schwag-a-thon and Prizes

We’re giving away schwag and prizes from our partners

Kickstand Mag and New Belgium hooked us up with beer and Substance is a media partner. See you there.

Phones are ringing, teletypes are clattering and reel-to-reel tapes are spinning up as the Bike Hugger gang puts the finishing touches on the plans for the Mobile Social Interbike. We’ve got a great party planned and want you to be a part.

Here’s the 411-

We’re going to ride from the Sands Convention Center to the USA Crit finals at Mandalay Bay where we’ll party at the VIP tent formerly used by Bicycling magazine. We’ll watch the race, drink free beer and have a prize giveaway. For those with legs to burn, we’ll do a hot lap on the crit course too.

Afterwards we’ll head to a super-secret location for our after-party and keep the vibe going until we’re all tuckered out.

We’ve got some great sponsors and happenings to announce soon on this, but you’ll need to RSVP to be part of this event, as space is limited. You can sign up for the events at either Upcoming or Facebook.

We’ve nailed down the details of our Mobile Social Interbike. Mobile Socials are an intersection of bikes, technology, and culture. We ride, talk bikes, blog, party, and fantastic giveaways from our fantastic sponsors. The event offers no douchebaggery or lameness, but is for like-minded cycling fans of all types to get together and talk about bikes.

This one’s going to be a great event—we’re riding from the Sands Convention Center (where the Interbike show is held) to the USA Crits Finals at Mandalay Bay including a nice tour of the strip and some local roads.

At the Crit we’ll hang out and have food, refreshments and product giveaways in our own VIP tent. We expect they’ll be an after-party at a nearby watering hole as well for some continued revelry.

We’ll meet at 6pm at the main entrance for the Sands Convention Center on Sands Av, at the bike lockers. Here’s the Google Maps location.

To attend this event, RSVP at our Upcoming site or on our Facebook page.

Las Vegas is a Bike Town

user-pic

Vegas isn't really known as a bike town. Well it is. We've ridden all over and it's tame compared to riding in Beijing or LA. Just like any other city, Vegas has bike shops, a scene, fixed, and Critical Mass too.

Just down the street from our hotel last year was Sexxpresso where we'd ride on up each morning last year during Mix 08.

ROAD Magazine Online

user-pic

road mag.JPG

I'm a big fan of ROAD Magazine. Their articles are more US-focused in a sport where all the other good rags are UK based. They get interviews with guys I want to read about - it's not like Bicycling where there's Lance...and then everybody else. They have one of the most prolific bike-related twitter'ers in Neil Browne who is always good for the latest insight. Road Magazine has an awesome new concept - the whole magazine online. I was looking through the most recent copy and check it out: Bikehugger Green at the USA Crit finals!

Great magazine, new distribution model, and apparently it even looks good on an iPhone for all you Apple fan-boy's.

Interbike Favorites

user-pic

Andrew and Byron have both weighed in on their favorite gear at Interbike 2008, and I’m overdue.

First off, I was excited to see that Xtracycle is releasing a center stand. We’ve blogged extensively about Big Dummy Bettie 2.5 and Val’s custom center stand. We love Val’s stand and it’s rock solid. We’ve used it while blending smoothies, and its great for stabilizing heavy loads. Val’s stand is pricey and out of reach for most xtracyclers, so this seems like a good option that is compatible with your WideLoaders. Retailing at $139 we’d love to see a handlebar mounted lever release integrated into the Xtracycle center stand, but we’re excited this product will soon be available.

More From Mobile Social Las Vegas

user-pic

moso_luxor.jpg

More photos from the Bikehugger Interbike Mobile Social… Including this one with the beacon in the background emanating from the Luxor Hotel. Riding down the strip in Vegas was a highlight of the trip. Riding with Xtracycles, Dahons, Mundos, and Fossil Fool, made this the most unique group ride at Interbike. We’re already planning our next Mobile Socials at SXSW, and Portland’s Webvision.

Las Vegas Alley Cat

user-pic

Interbike attracted all types of bike culture. Messengers gathering for a Las Vegas Alley Cat killed some time at the Sands Expo entertaining the crowd. For a short time, these guys were the best show on the strip.

What Stays in Vegas

user-pic

Press released and discussed at length on their blog, Interbike is staying in Vegas.

Let the comments commence!

Vegas Coffee Run

user-pic

So I’m at Mix 08, went out for a quick ride, and found the Hottest Coffee in Vegas

sexxpresso.jpg

A couple notes:

  • I forgot my helmet, back at home
  • Sexxpresso is an “only in Vegas” and probably better that it Stay in Vegas
  • Only a coinkadink that we’ve had back-to-back PG-13 posts

Riding the Brompton at CES

user-pic

So I rode the Brompton folding bike in Las Vegas during CES. I rode from the hotel right into the Intel booth in the same time that it would have taking me to get to the line waiting to buy monorail tickets (to wait in line for the very slow monorail to the waiting point at the station across the street from the convention hall..blah, blah waiting for traffic to cross blah, blah etc…etc).

Setting aside how much I hate the streets of Vegas, here are my impressions:

Bike in the Booth

user-pic

Cross-posted from Textura Design, a video featuring models, scenes from the CES Blogger party, Bloghaus, and a folding bike in the Intel booth.

It took us an hour in a car the day before to get to CES and under 5 minutes on a bike. At the door, I folding the bike up, and walked right into the booth. Then later, out of the booth, unfold, and off to a ride.

Biggest chicken parm ever

user-pic

In Vegas, off the strip and resorts, out where the locals eat you can get a chicken parm this big for like 8 bucks. Being the off season and all, I didn’t eat all of that, but did put a dent in it.

The calmest road in America

user-pic

During Interbike earlier this year, we spent a morning riding the strip, the bike expressway, and hearing from a local and a RTC employee about cycling in Vegas.

The road featured in the video is one of the calmest in America. It’s engineered to slow cars down and accommodate cyclists. I think they pipe in the sounds of songbirds, but couldn’t confirm it. If you do ride the strip, take up a whole lane like we did to let the cabbies know you’re there.

As I wrote earlier, “It’s surprising, yes, but Vegas is a bike-friendly town.”
