PUBLIC Bikes are available in SF at a Pop Up store in the Gap’s Flagship on Market Street. The founder Rob Forbes told us that the Gap is a good fit because their clothing is, “simple basic functional athletic nature.” We haven’t ridden a PUBLIC bike yet, but have posted on them and spotted them in SF.
Our ongoing commentary about the bike business and how to grow it, is to go boutique, like Apple Stores. Seeing a pop up is encouraging and we just learned that a Dahon is in the Wired store. Also note that we appreciate what Rob is doing, but also find the spec on the bikes disappointing and hope they upscale them to match their premium price. That’s a balance between bringing “city bikes” to a new audience and pleasing us enthusiasts.
