Trek Checkmate and Checkpoint are two new gravel bikes unveiled this week. Both are designed for off-road adventures. The all-new Checkmate SLR is Trek’s first dedicated gravel race bike. It boasts the brand’s lightest and fastest design. It is ideal for tackling the sport’s toughest events. Meanwhile, the new Checkpoint SL Gen 3 enhances the previous model with improved comfort, increased storage capacity, and a better fit, offering a carbon frame for long gravel rides and multi-day trips.
Both bikes feature Trek’s IsoSpeed technology, which smooths out rough terrain and helps riders stay stronger for longer. Additionally, their frames are equipped with mounts for Trek’s new adventure bags, including top tube, frame, and a more aero-efficient triangle bag that stays out of the wind.
It’s hard to believe that just a few seasons ago, we were all tackling dirt trails on CX bikes when thinking about this product category. The integrated bags are a nice touch.
Trek Checkmate SLR Features
Trek’s Lightest Gravel Bike Ever:
The Checkmate is Trek’s lightest gravel bike to date, featuring premium 800 Series OCLV Carbon, top-tier components, and a new lightweight tube shape technology that shaves off an entire pound from the previous Checkpoint SLR model.
Trek’s Fastest Gravel Bike Ever:
The Checkmate is also Trek’s fastest gravel bike, thanks to the same Full System Foil aero tube shapes and the aero one-piece bar/stem found on the Madone Gen 8. Combined with the new gravel race geometry, this design puts riders in a more aggressive and efficient riding position. According to Trek, the Checkmate is 5 minutes and 54 seconds faster than the Checkpoint SLR over the 200-mile Unbound course (at 200W).
New Lightweight and Aero One-Piece Bar/Stem:
The Checkmate features the ultra-light and aerodynamic one-piece carbon bar/stem from the Madone Gen 8. The hoods are 3cm narrower than the drops, allowing riders to switch between a more aerodynamic or controlled position. Either set up offers enhanced ergonomic comfort on the tops.
Room for Up to 45mm Tires (As Measured):
The Checkmate comes equipped with 38mm tires. It has the clearance to fit tires up to 45mm, making it capable of handling tougher race or training courses.
Customizable Through Project One:
The best way to get the Checkmate is through Trek’s Project One, allowing for customization of fit, components, and color. The new Project One ICON Raw Lithos scheme offers earthen hues available exclusively to Checkmate customers.
Trek offers a variety of sizes and an aluminum version for less costs.
